SUMMARY:Buckfast Abbey: The Rebuilding of a Medieval Monastery - a talk by Mark Cottle
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 16th March\, we welcome back the brilliant Mark Cottle\, who will give a talk on the building of Buckfast Abbey in Devon. \nBuckfast Abbey is a unique example in England of a medieval monastery beautifully rebuilt to its original design and use. Founded in 1018 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539\, the Abbey was rebuilt by a small group of dedicated monks in a project lasting just over 30 years. Using archive photographs\, many unpublished\, from the 1880’s to the late 1930’s\, this lecture will tell the story of Abbot Vonier’s great vision and how against the odds this was realised in stone. \nMark’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 16th March at 2pm. Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and mask wearing is encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 7th March by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
