SUMMARY:Tragedy & Triumph: Scott\, Amundsen & the Race to the South Pole
DESCRIPTION:In 1910 Antarctica was relatively unknown. Robert Scott\, Roald Amundsen\, and Ernest Shackleton had both been there on earlier expeditions but without reaching the Pole. \nWith reference to these earlier expeditions\, Mark Cottle’s lecture will focus initially on the photographs of Scott’s photographer Ponting and Edward Wilson’s watercolours – which both capture eloquently Scott’s expedition and Antarctica itself. It will then look at and assess the race between Scott and Amundsen to be first at the Pole. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system.
