SUMMARY:Talk: Newlyn Tidal Observatory with Richard Cockram
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhen new maps were required in the early 1900s it was known that a recognisable base or datum would first need to be established. That base would be the average sea level calculated over a number of years\, referred to as Mean Sea Level. Three places around the UK were chosen to take the measurements and Newlyn was one of them.\n\nThis is the story of why Newlyn was chosen\, how the Observatory was established and how the readings of sea level were taken through most of the First World War. Readings have continued ever since and now form one of the longest continuous records of sea level change in the world.\n\nSince the Newlyn Archive published a book about the Observatory\, it has been awarded Grade II listed status.\n\nTickets are allocated by a ballot system.\nPlease email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday\n5th October.\n\nEntry to this event is free but donations are welcomed to help support The Morrab Library (suggested £5). Refreshments will be provided after the talk.
