SUMMARY:Library Talk: ‘Dartmoor Elements – the ecological poems and play extracts of Mark Beeson’ by Tom Greeves
DESCRIPTION:Mark Beeson (1954-2022) was trained as a classicist and primatologist. From 1989-2022 he was artistic director of Manaton & East Dartmoor Theatre (MED Theatre) which he founded. Mark’s greatest legacy is his creative and ecological writing of poetry and plays relating to Dartmoor. As long ago as 1980 his epic poem – The Walk – won a prize in an international poetry competition\, where it was admired by Ted Hughes\, Seamus Heaney\, Charles Causley and Philip Larkin. \nDartmoor Elements (published in 2025) brings together 133 of Mark’s poems and poetic play extracts\, which are intimate reflections on his familiar environment of Dartmoor\, drawing on decades of keen observation of his surroundings and of the creatures (both animal and human) who inhabit it\, as well as on his deep knowledge of the moor’s folklore and culture. With Gillian Webster\, Tom Greeves edited Dartmoor Elements\, which forms the most significant collection of Dartmoor poetry ever published. The poems are accessible and often deeply moving\, and contain much ecological wisdom.   \nTICKETS \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or telephone 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot. The balot closes on Monday 9th March. \nEntery to this event is free but donations are welcomed to help support the library (suggested £5). \nRefrehments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:Tickets still available - Debut Authors: Jodie Matthews and Ian Russell-Hsieh in Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Our next talk in the Reading Room at The Morrab Library will be a conversation between two debut novelists: Cornish author Jodie Matthews and Cornwall-based author Ian Russell-Hsieh. Their books are two very different explorations of grief\, love and heritage and this conversation will be taking place on Saturday 20th July at 1.30pm. \nBoth of the books are available to borrow from the Library. Please email us if you would like to reserve either of the books. \n“Meet Me At The Surface” by Jodie Matthews\nMerryn grew up on the wilds of Bodmin moor\, raised by her mother and her aunt in an old farmhouse. Here\, the locals never leave the village\, fear for the future of their farms and cling desperately to the folkloric tales that are woven into their history. Except Merryn\, who has escaped to Manchester for university. When Merryn returns home for the memorial service of her ex-girlfriend Claud\, she finds her childhood home stranger and more secretive than ever. MEET ME AT THE SURFACE weaves myth with queer folk horror in an unforgettable mystery that introduces an exciting new voice in fiction. \n“I’m New Here” by Ian Russell-Hsieh\nFired from his job and dumped by his girlfriend\, Taiwanese-British photographer Sean flies to Taipei to seek oblivion. Lost in the neon heat of his parents’ homeland\, though\, all he finds is alienation. Then\, a chance encounter with a mysterious older man draws him into a friendship where the terms of engagement are quickly\, ominously blurred. I’M NEW HERE is a thrilling\, hallucinatory debut and masterclass in unreliable narration. \nTickets are still available. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 for a ticket.  Entry to this event is free but donations are welcomed to help support The Morrab Library (suggested £5). SUMMARY:A look at the work of Serena Wadham - Photojournalist | A talk from Lesley Billingham
DESCRIPTION:Our next talk at the library will be from Lesley Billingham about the photojournalist\, Serena Wadham. \n“Serena Wadham (1930-2006) was a photojournalist who was based in Islington from the late 1960s until 1987\, when she retired to Cornwall\, spending her final years at Middle Georgia Farm\, Nancledra\, near St Ives. After her death her family presented a substantial collection of her negatives\, contact sheets and prints\, plus some press material and correspondence\, to the Morrab Library in Penzance. The bulk of the collection relates to Serena Wadham’s activities in and around London. But the rest comprises Cornish themes such as early journalistic assignments\, the landscape\, neighbours and farming around Nancledra\, and a 1990s campaign against the redevelopment of Hayle.” Written by Photo Archive volunteer Robin Lenman in May 2008 for the exhibition he curated at the library. \nLesley Billingham came across the Serena Wadham collection in 2015 when she found out that a substantial portion of extensive collection hundreds of prints\, two and a half thousand 35mm films (each holding up to 36 images) – was sitting in boxes just waiting to be catalogued by another eager volunteer.  \nSerena was a musician\, a motorcyclist\, a feminist\, a photographer – “my kind of woman”\, thought Lesley! In her talk\, Lesley will show a small sample of Serena’s photographs and will share some of her research about her work. \nYou can view the Serena Wadham archive on our photo archive website here. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 9th October. SUMMARY:William Borlase\, Uniformitarianism and the Ice Age in Cornwall | With Professor James Scourse
DESCRIPTION:For natural scientists working in Cornwall\, Borlase is where it all started. His descriptions and observations are hugely valuable and his interpretations are well ahead of their time. James’ talk will focus on his observations on the geology at Porth Nanven (Cot Valley). He will explain why Borlase was years ahead of the movers and shakers in geology at the time in interpreting the sediments\, in terms of processes operating now (the actualistic principle that underlies Uniformitarianism) rather than resorting to Biblical explanations. \nHe will then explain our current understanding of these and associated sediments and how we can interpret them to paint a picture of how Cornwall has evolved over the last 120\,000 years\, latterly coinciding with archaeology and cultural evolution. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 8th May. \nEntry is £5 by donation to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:No Place to Hide - an author's talk with JS Monroe
DESCRIPTION:Join author J.S.Monroe as he talks about his new contemporary thriller\, No Place To Hide\, a loose retelling of Dr Faustus. Set in Cambridge in the 1990s and in London in the present day\, the story charts a successful Cornish doctor’s dramatic fall from grace 24 years after he made a pact to cover up a horrific crime at university. The book concludes with a thrilling climax at the Minack theatre\, live-streamed across the Dark Web… \nJon will speak about how he researched the book and came up with the idea\, why he used Cornwall as a location\, the process of writing\, and then talk about writing in general\, his own career\, how publishing works\, and the need for a thick skin! \nJ. S. Monroe read English at Cambridge\, worked as a foreign correspondent in Delhi\, and was Weekend editor of the Daily Telegraph in London before becoming a full- time writer. His psychological thriller Find Me became a bestseller in 2017\, and\, under his real name Jon Stock\, he is also the author of five spy thrillers. Warner Brothers bought the film rights to the Dead Spy Running trilogy. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. SUMMARY:The British Way of War - A talk by Professor Andrew Lambert
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Andrew Lambert on Wednesday 13th April for a fascinating insight into the uniqueness of  British war strategy. British security needs have been maritime and oceanic\, rather than military and continental\, unlike those of  other major powers\, and when British Governments forget that reality the results have been devastating\, in lives and resources. At the centre of the lecture is Sir Julian Corbett\, (1854-1922)\, the brilliant strategist who developed the concept of a distinctive ‘British Way’ working with the Royal Navy\, Government and the academic community. \nAndrew’s talk is based around his book of the same title – you can listen to a podcast about it here. \nAndrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College\, London\, and Director of the Laughton Naval History Unit. His work focuses on the naval and strategic history of the British Empire between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War and the evolution of seapower. He has published widely and is winner of Anderson Medal of the Society for Nautical Research and the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History. \nAndrew’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 13th April at 2.00pm.  Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and face coverings encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 4th April by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.

SUMMARY:Abigail Reynolds' Lost Libraries - fully booked
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED…\n‘Normal’ service is on its way…\nWe are delighted to let you know that we are making a tentative step towards resuming our talks programme\, and the first of these promises to be quite special. Numbers by necessity need to be reduced in the Reading Room\, so this will ‘sell out’ quite fast – apologies to those who miss out this time. We will retain a waiting list in case of cancellations. As ever\, we ask for a donation at the door\, and you can book by contacting the library. Refreshments will be served afterwards. \n  \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2016 Abigail Reynolds became the third recipient of the BMW Art Journey\, for her project The Ruins of Time: Lost Libraries of the Silk Road. Abigail made a five-month long journey to fifteen library sites along the Silk Road. The libraries were lost to political conflicts\, natural catastrophes\, revolutions\, and wars. \nReynolds’ journey was based on extensive research and took her to sites dating from 291 BC to 2011 AD\, including libraries along the whole length of the Silk Road – in China\, Uzbekistan\, Turkey\, Egypt\, Italy\, and Iran. Along the way\, Reynolds gathered material on sixteen mm film\, and by written text. \nAt Morrab library she will be talking about her book ‘Lost Libraries’ – a document of her travels which completes a journey that both starts and ends with the institution of the library. \n“The lost libraries are sad and lonely sites\, once full of voices in discussion. What was previously known\, though\, is perhaps never really lost. The enlightenment offered by the libraries is now extinguished\, but the embrace of the dark is not the same as despair.”\n– Abigail Reynolds \nWednesday 3rd November\, 2pm\nBooking Essential\n£5 Suggested Donation
