SUMMARY:Deadlier Than The Male: Wives of the Generals\, 1677-1937
DESCRIPTION:How much influence did notable wives have on the leading commanders in British military history? These women tend to be disregarded but\, as Trina Beckett demonstrates in this revealing and thought- provoking study\, their influence has often been profound. Taking examples from the eighteenth century to the Second World War\, she uncovers a hidden dimension in the rise to prominence of some of Britain’s most famous soldiers and documents a series of fascinating relationships between powerful men and equally powerful women. Sarah Churchill\, Duchess of Marlborough\, and Dorothy\, Countess Haig are perhaps the most famous examples of wives who played important roles in their husbands’ brilliant careers. Yet sometimes the wives of leading commanders would be hindered as well as helped by their wives. Paulina Wood proved such a disastrous hostess that she almost destroyed the career of Sir Evelyn Wood\, and Lord Robert’s reputation for jobbery owed much to his wife Nora’s constant interference in appointments. Trina Beckett’s perceptive and absorbing case studies reveal much about the women whose lives she portrays and the contribution they made to their distinguished husbands’ military careers. \nTrina Beckett has contributed to a number of short story anthologies\, including The Waterloo Collection: An Anthology of Short Stories (2011)\, which raised funds to restore Hougoumont Chateau in time for the battle’s bicentenary commemorations. Trina is married\, has 2 children\, 4 grandchildren\, and lives in Cornwall: this is her first book. \n  \nFree\, all welcome & booking recommended.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Wed 8th May\, 2pm - Stephen Glendenning: The Art of the Book
DESCRIPTION:This event is now Sold Out – please contact us to place your name on the reserve list.\nWed 8th May\, 2pm – Stephen Glendenning:\nThe Art of the Book\nHow Artists have Challenged the Conventions of Publishing Throughout History\nThe Book: It is perhaps one of the most significant and iconic design objects of western culture. \nStephen works as a conservation bookbinder and whilst his work is to preserve material culture\, he is also aware that western culture evolves and moves forward by a willingness to challenge conventions\, question the norms and occasionally break the rules! \nDuring the 20th century\, artists and crafts people have sought to challenge or improve upon the conventions of what a book might be. Their inventive approach has brought forward new designs and ideas which encourage us to rethink the purpose and function of books. Sometimes subversive\, sometimes delightful; these ideas often go hand in hand with the pioneering philosophical and psychological viewpoints of their time. \nThis lecture presents the findings of a two year research project that seeks to re-frame our understanding of the humble codex. \nGet ready for some surprises. \n \nBOOKING IS ESSENTIAL\n£4 suggested donation per person

SUMMARY:Abigail Reynolds' Lost Libraries - fully booked
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED…\n‘Normal’ service is on its way…\nWe are delighted to let you know that we are making a tentative step towards resuming our talks programme\, and the first of these promises to be quite special. Numbers by necessity need to be reduced in the Reading Room\, so this will ‘sell out’ quite fast – apologies to those who miss out this time. We will retain a waiting list in case of cancellations. As ever\, we ask for a donation at the door\, and you can book by contacting the library. Refreshments will be served afterwards. \n  \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2016 Abigail Reynolds became the third recipient of the BMW Art Journey\, for her project The Ruins of Time: Lost Libraries of the Silk Road. Abigail made a five-month long journey to fifteen library sites along the Silk Road. The libraries were lost to political conflicts\, natural catastrophes\, revolutions\, and wars. \nReynolds’ journey was based on extensive research and took her to sites dating from 291 BC to 2011 AD\, including libraries along the whole length of the Silk Road – in China\, Uzbekistan\, Turkey\, Egypt\, Italy\, and Iran. Along the way\, Reynolds gathered material on sixteen mm film\, and by written text. \nAt Morrab library she will be talking about her book ‘Lost Libraries’ – a document of her travels which completes a journey that both starts and ends with the institution of the library. \n“The lost libraries are sad and lonely sites\, once full of voices in discussion. What was previously known\, though\, is perhaps never really lost. The enlightenment offered by the libraries is now extinguished\, but the embrace of the dark is not the same as despair.”\n– Abigail Reynolds \nWednesday 3rd November\, 2pm\nBooking Essential\n£5 Suggested Donation

SUMMARY:The British Way of War - A talk by Professor Andrew Lambert
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Andrew Lambert on Wednesday 13th April for a fascinating insight into the uniqueness of  British war strategy. British security needs have been maritime and oceanic\, rather than military and continental\, unlike those of  other major powers\, and when British Governments forget that reality the results have been devastating\, in lives and resources. At the centre of the lecture is Sir Julian Corbett\, (1854-1922)\, the brilliant strategist who developed the concept of a distinctive ‘British Way’ working with the Royal Navy\, Government and the academic community. \nAndrew’s talk is based around his book of the same title – you can listen to a podcast about it here. \nAndrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College\, London\, and Director of the Laughton Naval History Unit. His work focuses on the naval and strategic history of the British Empire between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War and the evolution of seapower. He has published widely and is winner of Anderson Medal of the Society for Nautical Research and the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History. \nAndrew’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 13th April at 2.00pm.  Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and face coverings encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 4th April by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
