Their new project is supported by Arts Council England and involved talking to surfers across Cornwall – why surf? SUMMARY:A look at the work of Serena Wadham - Photojournalist | A talk from Lesley Billingham
DESCRIPTION:Our next talk at the library will be from Lesley Billingham about the photojournalist\, Serena Wadham. \n“Serena Wadham (1930-2006) was a photojournalist who was based in Islington from the late 1960s until 1987\, when she retired to Cornwall\, spending her final years at Middle Georgia Farm\, Nancledra\, near St Ives. After her death her family presented a substantial collection of her negatives\, contact sheets and prints\, plus some press material and correspondence\, to the Morrab Library in Penzance. The bulk of the collection relates to Serena Wadham’s activities in and around London. But the rest comprises Cornish themes such as early journalistic assignments\, the landscape\, neighbours and farming around Nancledra\, and a 1990s campaign against the redevelopment of Hayle.” Written by Photo Archive volunteer Robin Lenman in May 2008 for the exhibition he curated at the library. \nLesley Billingham came across the Serena Wadham collection in 2015 when she found out that a substantial portion of extensive collection hundreds of prints\, two and a half thousand 35mm films (each holding up to 36 images) – was sitting in boxes just waiting to be catalogued by another eager volunteer.  \nSerena was a musician\, a motorcyclist\, a feminist\, a photographer – “my kind of woman”\, thought Lesley! In her talk\, Lesley will show a small sample of Serena’s photographs and will share some of her research about her work. \nYou can view the Serena Wadham archive on our photo archive website here. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 9th October. Entry to this event is free but donations are welcomed to help support Morrab Library (suggested £5). Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:FULLY BOOKED - ‘When England Had Scarcely Begun’: Sutton Hoo and the Lindisfarne Gospels | A Study Day with Mark Cottle
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis event is now fully booked\nMark Cottle is returning to the library to run another Study Day at the Library on Saturday 14th October\, from 10.15-1.30pm. This workshop will focus on Sutton Hoo and the Lindisfarne Gospels. \nSutton Hoo and the Lindisfarne Gospels provide remarkable insights into the England of the 7th century. \nEarly in the century\, a great ship was dragged ashore from the river Deben in Suffolk.  It became the burial place of a powerful Anglo-Saxon warlord\, buried with a mound of treasures from all over the known world.  Fine weaponry\, gold coins and exquisitely crafted jewellery reflected levels of sophistication which were a revelation. \nAt the end of the 7th century\, after its conversion to Christianity\, the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria enjoyed a brief golden age – a result of which was the Lindisfarne Gospels\, one of the most impressive works of art of the whole medieval period. \nThe first morning session will focus on Sutton Hoo and the Staffordshire Hoard with reference to the Prittlewell Prince excavation.  The second session after looking at the conversion of England to Christianity will focus on the Northumbrian Golden Age and the Lindisfarne Gospels. \nBooking for this study day is essential. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk to book a place. Payment will be cash only on the day (£12.50).

SUMMARY:Global Philosophy: A Brief Introduction to Jainism and Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Join Darren Harper for another fascinating philosophy workshop. \nMuch of the world’s philosophy has historically been ignored by the West. Yet\, if philosophy is the love of wisdom\, there is no doubt that the philosophy of other cultures can enrich us further still.  This half-day course will explore two religions which emerged in opposition to Hinduism: Jainism and Buddhism. \n£12 or pay what you can afford. \nPlease email darrenharper.esq@gmail.com or book via eventbrite at  www.eventbrite.com/e/707994148557?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Adventure in the Andes: Life Cycle biodiversity bike ride
DESCRIPTION:Our next Library talk comes from former university lecturer turned eco-adventurer\, Kate Rawles. Kate cycled the length of South America on a bike made of bamboo from the Eden Project she built herself. En route she explored biodiversity: what it is\, what’s happening to it and why losing it amounts to as great a threat as climate change. Join us to hear about the brilliant and brave activists Kate met; the highs and lows of the journey; and above all\, what we can all do. \nHer talk will be taking place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 11th October at 2pm. Tickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 2nd October. \nEntry to this event is free but donations are welcomed to help support Morrab Library (suggested £5). Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:EMBROIDER A BEE
DESCRIPTION:Vicks Harrison started the Embroidered Bees Project in 2019 to raise awareness of the loss of biodiversity. The project will create a huge art quilt to help people develop their embroidery skills and learn more about the nearly 300 kinds of bees we have in this country and. It is a long term project and it is hoped that the final artwork will be exhibited to raise donations for wildlife projects. \nThis workshop will be an opportunity to produce embroidered bees to be added to the project. Complete beginners are very welcome. \nMore detail about the project is contained in two videos\n1) is a lovely introduction https://vimeo.com/724988781/f27d4ca421\n2) is a how to video https://vimeo.com/766141264/365f9de6db \nPlease bring a small hoop and a needle\, and any embroidery threads and/or cream or white fabric that you have. Old linen napkins and tablecloths are great. This is an unfunded project but Vicks does have a few materials. If you have any embroidery thread\, a needle and scissors that would be very helpful – otherwise just book and turn up \nPlease pay what you can – we suggest £3 to £5. Places are limited and booking is essential so please email Vickyvicks@btinternet.com or text 07834287562 to book a place.

SUMMARY:Pillas: Our forgotten grain - a talk by Harriet Gendall
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n“Pillas”—wrote Morton Nance in 1930— “sometimes called “pill-corn” or “naked oats\, […] smaller than oats and without husk\, was formerly a common crop in Cornwall\, but seems now to have become quite extinct.” In earlier centuries\, adventurers and botanists described this intriguing grain as cultivated in abundance near Land’s End\, where it thrived on marginal soils. It made a hearty porridge known as ‘pillas-gerts’ and was used to fatten pigs and calves\, while thatching-rope and bonnets were woven from its fine straw. But by the mid-nineteenth century it was gone from Cornish fields. \nThis year—for the first time in over 150 years—pillas is being harvested in Penwith.  Its remarkable survival in seedbanks has enabled ethnobotanical researcher Harriet Gendall to explore its reintroduction\, in partnership with local farmers and growers.  \nJoin us in hearing about her journey with pillas\, as well as it’s forgotten history and complex entanglement with Cornish identity—including a fascinating twist involving Morrab’s very own Head Gardener William Watson (1929-1951). \nEntry to the talk is by ballot – please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 by Monday 4th September to enter. We will let you know if you have been successful or not. \nWe ask for a £5 donation on entry to help support the library. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
