DESCRIPTION:Morrab Library is full of treasures – the seeds for a fascinating story! In this workshop for 8-14 year olds\, children’s author Bridget Crowley will lead you around the library and use the little details found along the way as the starting point for a morning of creative writing: \nWho is the painting of the man on the landing? Where might the boat be sailing to\, across the stormy seas? What stories might Humphry Davy’s chair be able tell us if it could talk? Does the mouse know why the clock in the Children’s Room stopped ticking?\n\nEntry is £5 by donation to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Booking is essential – email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to book a place. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be cake for children (and their grown ups too!)

SUMMARY:William Borlase\, Uniformitarianism and the Ice Age in Cornwall | With Professor James Scourse
DESCRIPTION:For natural scientists working in Cornwall\, Borlase is where it all started. His descriptions and observations are hugely valuable and his interpretations are well ahead of their time. James’ talk will focus on his observations on the geology at Porth Nanven (Cot Valley). He will explain why Borlase was years ahead of the movers and shakers in geology at the time in interpreting the sediments\, in terms of processes operating now (the actualistic principle that underlies Uniformitarianism) rather than resorting to Biblical explanations. \nHe will then explain our current understanding of these and associated sediments and how we can interpret them to paint a picture of how Cornwall has evolved over the last 120\,000 years\, latterly coinciding with archaeology and cultural evolution. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 8th May. \nEntry is £5 by donation to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:FULLY BOOKED - Poetry of Place - A workshop with Jodie Hollander
DESCRIPTION:FULLY BOOKED – this event is fully booked \nJodie Hollander’s workshop will focus on the significance of place in poetry. Place may be defined as a geographical location\, an internal state\, or perhaps a poetic meeting of the two. Using the library’s unique and extraordinary surroundings as an inspiration\, this workshop will lead students through a series of writing prompts to ultimately create an original draft of a poem. In addition\, the class will centre around how to structure and develop poems and the creative process that is involved. \nJodie’s work has appeared in numerous poetry journals. Her debut full-length collection\, My Dark Horses\, was published with Liverpool University Press & Oxford University Press. Her second collection\, Nocturne\, will be published in Spring 2023. She is the recipient of a MacDowell fellowship and a Fulbright fellowship in South Africa. \nBooking is essential – please contact the library at enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or telephone: 01736 364474 to reserve a place. Cost: £20 payable on the day.

SUMMARY:Two Autumns | Film screening and Q&A with film maker Peter Chapman
DESCRIPTION:For most of his career in television\, Peter Chapman made arts documentaries including ‘Two Autumns’ about the work of the land artist\, Andy Goldsworthy.  The film followed Andy as he made work in the Scottish Borders and a small village in Japan called Ouchiama. The contrast between the two Autumns is stark with the vivid reds of the Maple and the Cheery Blossom contrasting with the darker tones of the leafy Scottish Borders. \nPeter’s talk will comprise a viewing of the film\, followed by a break for teas and coffees. There will then be a Q&A about the making of the film. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Wednesday 29th March. \nEntry is £5 by donation to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.

SUMMARY:No Place to Hide - an author's talk with JS Monroe
DESCRIPTION:Join author J.S.Monroe as he talks about his new contemporary thriller\, No Place To Hide\, a loose retelling of Dr Faustus. Set in Cambridge in the 1990s and in London in the present day\, the story charts a successful Cornish doctor’s dramatic fall from grace 24 years after he made a pact to cover up a horrific crime at university. The book concludes with a thrilling climax at the Minack theatre\, live-streamed across the Dark Web… \nJon will speak about how he researched the book and came up with the idea\, why he used Cornwall as a location\, the process of writing\, and then talk about writing in general\, his own career\, how publishing works\, and the need for a thick skin! \nJ. S. Monroe read English at Cambridge\, worked as a foreign correspondent in Delhi\, and was Weekend editor of the Daily Telegraph in London before becoming a full- time writer. His psychological thriller Find Me became a bestseller in 2017\, and\, under his real name Jon Stock\, he is also the author of five spy thrillers. Warner Brothers bought the film rights to the Dead Spy Running trilogy. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Thursday 23rd March. We request a suggested donation of £5 to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.
