SUMMARY:The life and good works of John Passmore Edwards | A talk from Morrab Library Trustee\, Paul Phillips
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted that our next talk at the library will be given by Paul Phillips\, one of the Trustees at Morrab Library. On Wednesday 6th December at 2pm in the Reading Room\, Paul will be talking about the life of the remarkable John Passmore Edwards. \nPassmore Edwards was born at Blackwater\, near Redruth in 1823\, the son of a carpenter. Through his good works which were not without many a setback over the years\, he became Cornwall’s most generous philanthropist\, donating a mixture of schools\, hospitals\, convalescent homes\, reading rooms\, galleries and more. Passmore Edwards met with adversity throughout his lifetime of giving to the Nation\, from Newlyn to Clacton out on the East coast. \nPaul Phillips was born in Leedstown in 1937\, from there he attended Helston Grammar school\, travelling on the Helston Branch line. Paul joined the Metropolitan Police Cadet Force which led to him joining the Adult Police Force. He returned to his native Cornwall in 1967 on the day that the Torrey Canyon hit the rocks off Lands End. Since those early days Paul’s journey has taken many turns and diversions including being Barded for his exceptional work in preserving and recording Cornwall’s rich dialect in 2019. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. SUMMARY:Rare Books Open Day at the Morrab Library
DESCRIPTION:The Morrab Library holds a vast array of rare\, historic and important books in its collections. The most special of all are locked away\, available to view by appointment\, but rarely seen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Thursday 30th November\, the library will host an Open Day\, where some of the finest examples of published works from our collections will be on display. Included will be works by Dickens\, Aristotle\, Chaucer\, Pliny the Elder\, Spenser\, Dante\, Clemo\, Milton as well as important and rare Cornish volumes. \nThese collections have been donated and collected over the last 200 years and this is an opportunity to get to know about some of the important and special items we care for. \nA number of our titles are in need of conservation\, so if you are inspired to make a donation towards the care of these incredible collections\, we would be very grateful. \nYou don’t need to book\, just drop in on the day. We look forward to seeing you on the 30th.

SUMMARY:The SAD Detective: Expert advice on writing a novel\, and how to ignore it | with Colin Stringer
DESCRIPTION:The next talk at Morrab Library will be taking place on Wednesday 29th November at 2pm. \nBefore writing his novel\, ‘The SAD Detective’\, Colin Stringer sought advice from the Open University and the internet. He has compiled a top ten of the suggestions that he discovered\, which is almost as funny as the book he ended up writing. \nHis talk will be a humorous account of the novel writing process\, punctuated with songs\, poems and anecdotes. The project will create a huge art quilt to help people develop their embroidery skills and learn more about the nearly 300 kinds of bees we have in this country and. It is a long term project and it is hoped that the final artwork will be exhibited to raise donations for wildlife projects.\n\nThis workshop will be an opportunity to produce embroidered bees to be added to the project. SUMMARY:Broadening the mind: The travels and travails of Hugh Seymour Tremenheere
DESCRIPTION:Our next talk at the Library will be from Guy English who will be giving an insight into the life of Hugh Seymour Tremenheere and our  ‘Tremenheere Collection’ in our archive at the Morrab Library. The talk will take place in the Reading Room at 2pm on Wednesday 15th November. \nGuy describes Hugh Seymour Tremenheere as “an unsung Cornish man who shaped our world” and “the most significant Cornishman you’ve never heard of”. Through his talk\, he will explore the travels of this Cornish boy of Family but no Fortune and how he became an unsung hero of social reform in Victorian England\, having an impact on nearly every aspect of society\, still recognisable today. \nGuy English worked making Kodak film and then came to Cornwall in 2001 for better sailing than London. With his late wife Catharine\, secretive artist and poet\, he produced several reports\, and books\, some involving botany. \nThis led him to the Morrab Library\, and he has been volunteering\, documenting the extensive archives for several years. One such archive was that of the Borlase family\, which then morphed into the Tremenheeres\, a project he completed in 2022. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. DESCRIPTION:  \nWe are sorry to say this event has been cancelled.\nTickets for this event are now available directly from Morrab Library – please contact us to book. Entry is now free but donations are welcomed to help support the library (suggested £5).  \nA live spoken word event\, where Mor poets will share poetry from their new book\, Mordardh. This all-women poetry collective created ‘Morvoren: the poetry of sea swimming’ in 2022. They are back with ‘Mordardh’\, which is Cornish for breaking wave. Their new project is supported by Arts Council England and involved talking to surfers across Cornwall – why surf? Whether you’re a seasoned surfer\, sea swimmer or simply someone who appreciates the power of words\, do come along and hear  \nLed by Ella Walsworth-Bell and a shoal of mer-poets: Kerry Vincent\, Abi Ottley\, Kate Barden\, Ulrike Duran Bravo. \nWith guest poet Megan Chapman\, aka MCMC Spoken\, a lyrical rhyming wizard. Her unique rhythmic style and cutting content offers a mesmerising performance. Her poetic and hip-hop delivery\, infused with beats\, strings and vocals\, is beautifully raw and captures humanity. In 2022 she was a guest poet on Radio 4\, and she performs throughout Cornwall\, across the UK\, and internationally. With not much space in and around Penzance town Cornwall Council are offering residents a chance to plant a free tree in their front or back garden to make a difference. \nTrees on offer include Rowan\, Whitebeam\, Hazel\, Crab Apple and Hawthorn. SUMMARY:Experimental Animation Workshop for 11-16 year olds
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin digital artist and former artist-in-residence Karen Lorenz on Wednesday 25th October for this brilliant workshop. \nLearn helpful tips and tricks during this stop-motion animation taster day! You will learn how to use the animation software and operate camera equipment\, and then try animating with a range of different materials. Did you know you can animate any random objects you might have in your bag or find in the library? You can animate pretty much anything! \nThe taster day will culminate in creating short animation sequences. \nWe provide all the equipment\, including cameras\, tripods\, light boxes\, sound equipment\, iMacs and laptops with animation software\, lights and art/craft materials. \nThe day is aimed at 11-16 year olds.
