SUMMARY:From the Corner of a Cornishman's Eye - Bert Biscoe
DESCRIPTION:Jubilee observations of a “chronic optimist” on key changes in the cognition of Cornish people 1952 – 2022\nJoin Bert Biscoe as he reflects upon changes for the better within the modern Cornwall that he helped to build. \nBert was born in 1952\, just after the late Queen first felt the weight of the crown settle on her head. He was excited to attend the opening of the Tamar Bridge by the Queen Mother in 1962\, and in 1977 he was amongst the crowd at the Winter Gardens in Penzance\, when The Sex Pistols exhorted God to save the Queen! \nIt was at a Mebyon Kernow conference\, in his role of Chair of the Cornish Constitutional Convention\, that Bert was introduced as “a chronic optimist!” \nWe will allocate tickets using a ballot system\, so please email or call Morrab Library to register your interest by Monday 10th October. \nRefreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Big Brother or Brave New World? Britain's Relationship with Technology -Library Talk
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to bring you another fascinating talk\, this time from Stephanie Hare\, researcher\, broadcaster and author of ‘Technology Is Not Neutral: A Short Guide to Technology Ethics‘. \nIt seems that just about every new technology that we bring to bear on improving our lives brings with it some downside\, side effect or unintended consequence. These issues can pose very real and growing ethical  problems for all of us. How do we understand and frame these debates\, and work out a healthy relationship with technology?\n\nIn this talk Stephanie will address one of today’s most pressing problems: how to create and use tools and technologies to maximise benefits and minimise harms? \nThe talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 12th October at 2pm. £5 suggested donation to support Morrab Library. Refreshments will be served after the talk. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to register your interest in attending by Monday 3rd October. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful.

SUMMARY:From Holbein to Byrd: The Art & Music of the Tudor Century
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to welcome Mark Cottle back to Morrab Library for his brilliant workshop From Holbein to Byrd: The Art and Music of the Tudor Century. \nThe long anticipated workshop – which we had to postpone it in 2020 due to Covid19 – will now take place at Morrab Library on Saturday 1st October from 10.15am – 1.30pm. \nBehind the Tudors and their turbulent century\, a great cultural awakening arose\, transforming the medieval world it replaced. In this half day class\, based on illustrated lectures and course files\, aims to capture something of the depth\, breadth and vitality of a century discovering New Worlds\, as much cultural as geographical. It will explore the art and music of the Tudor period via Holbein’s paintings\, the miniatures of Hilliard and Oliver and music by the Madrigalists. \nTickets are £12.50 per person – cash only  – advance payment and booking is essential. Unlike our library talks\, places to this workshop will not be allocated via a ballot system and we expect it will be very popular so please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to book your place as soon as you can. Refreshments will be included in the ticket price.

SUMMARY:'Just Suppose...' | A creative writing workshop for 8 - 14 year olds
DESCRIPTION:  \nWe have a lovely creative writing workshop coming up on the Tuesday 23rd August for 8 – 14 year olds\, lead by children’s author\, Bridget Crowley. \nJust suppose … that endangered plants started to flourish once again in Penwith?\nJust suppose …that the thing you love most about Penwith was about to disappear. What would you do?\nJust suppose …that you could change one thing about Penwith to make it even better than it is. What would it be? \nIn this workshop\, Bridget will use artefacts and books in the Morrab Library to spark off ideas for creative writing that will light up a brighter future for Penwith. We’ll also spend some time outside in Morrab Gardens\, taking inspiration from the rare plants in the gardens. There will be writing games\, chanting\, plenty of ideas for the budding writer (and cake too!) \nThe pieces created at the workshop will then be included in the Penwith Futures Book – the very special book that the Morrab Library is compiling\, filled with positive ideas from the people of Penwith for the future of this special place. The book will be kept safe in the library for all to read and to inspire change. \nFor the past twenty-five years or so\, Bridget has been leading creative-writing workshops for children in major art galleries and museums all over the UK\, from Tate St Ives via the Wallace Collection to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. She was a regular facilitator for Young Cultural Creator sessions in museums on barges and boats\, in post offices and county archives and wrote audio-descriptions for blind and partially sighted children for the Reading Agency. Her four critically acclaimed children’s books were published by Hodder\, one of which was nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe Awards in America. \nWe ask for a suggested donation of £5. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Booking essential\, please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to book a place.

SUMMARY:Who was Frank Latham and what did he do for Penzance?
DESCRIPTION:Captain Frank Latham designed the Jubilee Pool\, that much most people know\, but what else did he do for the town? \nBorn in 1873 in Croydon he was the Borough Surveyor and Engineer for Penzance from 1899 to 1938 and during this time he was involved in many of the town’s activities. But why did this bright young man\, who at the age of only 39 was appointed to the prestigious post of President of the Institution of Municipal Engineers\, come to a small town at the end of the line and remain here for the rest of his working life? Can we still see the contributions he made to the fabric of Penzance? Why do we know so little about him; until recently his name was hardly known? \nIn this talk\, Robin Knight will try to answer these and other questions that surround the life of this interesting man and take you on a ‘magic-lantern’ tour of Latham’s Penzance. \nPlease register your interest in attending by Monday 8th August & tell us how many tickets you would like. We will then draw out names from the ballot & let you know if you have been successful. £5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop - inspired by The Palace of Holyroodhouse with Bridget Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Join author and art historian Bridget Crowley for an innovative workshop which will use the stories\, history\, paintings and artefacts of this historic Scottish palace to inspire your own free\, creative writing. \nBridget Crowley is an author and art historian\, with a previous life in theatre. For many years\, she has worked with students of all ages in the major national art galleries and museums\, looking at images\, artefacts and architecture as a source for creative writing. She recently finished a two-year stint at the National Gallery in London as one of a team of six authors writing the new accessible descriptions of the collection for their website. She also provided the text for audio-described tours for blind and partially sighted visitors to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Westminster Abbey\, and the introductory notes for such visits for the Tate St Ives website. Her four children’s books were published by Hodder\, one of them nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe award in the USA.  \nThe Palace of Holyroodhouse is Her Majesty the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. It stands under the shadow of Arthur’s Seat\, the ancient extinct volcano which has seen the drama of the royal story in Edinburgh unfold over hundreds of years. Part magnificent palace and part dour fortress\, Holyroodhouse tells the stories of the Stuarts and later British monarchs in its rooms\, its art and artefacts. Bridget will use images of the palace to illustrate those stories and to give you impetus for your own free\, creative writing. She may also give you a peep behind the scenes to give you an idea of what it’s like to work there today! \nTo book a place or for more information contact Morrab Library.
