SUMMARY:Who was Frank Latham and what did he do for Penzance?
DESCRIPTION:Captain Frank Latham designed the Jubilee Pool\, that much most people know\, but what else did he do for the town? \nBorn in 1873 in Croydon he was the Borough Surveyor and Engineer for Penzance from 1899 to 1938 and during this time he was involved in many of the town’s activities. But why did this bright young man\, who at the age of only 39 was appointed to the prestigious post of President of the Institution of Municipal Engineers\, come to a small town at the end of the line and remain here for the rest of his working life? Can we still see the contributions he made to the fabric of Penzance? Why do we know so little about him; until recently his name was hardly known? \nIn this talk\, Robin Knight will try to answer these and other questions that surround the life of this interesting man and take you on a ‘magic-lantern’ tour of Latham’s Penzance. \nPlease register your interest in attending by Monday 8th August & tell us how many tickets you would like. We will then draw out names from the ballot & let you know if you have been successful. £5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop - inspired by The Palace of Holyroodhouse with Bridget Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Join author and art historian Bridget Crowley for an innovative workshop which will use the stories\, history\, paintings and artefacts of this historic Scottish palace to inspire your own free\, creative writing. \nBridget Crowley is an author and art historian\, with a previous life in theatre. For many years\, she has worked with students of all ages in the major national art galleries and museums\, looking at images\, artefacts and architecture as a source for creative writing. She recently finished a two-year stint at the National Gallery in London as one of a team of six authors writing the new accessible descriptions of the collection for their website. She also provided the text for audio-described tours for blind and partially sighted visitors to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Westminster Abbey\, and the introductory notes for such visits for the Tate St Ives website. Her four children’s books were published by Hodder\, one of them nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe award in the USA.  \nThe Palace of Holyroodhouse is Her Majesty the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. It stands under the shadow of Arthur’s Seat\, the ancient extinct volcano which has seen the drama of the royal story in Edinburgh unfold over hundreds of years. Part magnificent palace and part dour fortress\, Holyroodhouse tells the stories of the Stuarts and later British monarchs in its rooms\, its art and artefacts. Bridget will use images of the palace to illustrate those stories and to give you impetus for your own free\, creative writing. She may also give you a peep behind the scenes to give you an idea of what it’s like to work there today! \nTo book a place or for more information contact Morrab Library.

SUMMARY:Reading and Re-Reading Daphne du Maurier: how books change us A talk by Dr Serena Trowbridge
DESCRIPTION:A book may always be the same\, but readers change; books we read as young adults speak to us in very different ways throughout our lives. This informal talk will explore a thirty-year engagement with du Maurier’s novels\, from breathless teenage reading in the school library to teaching them in a university setting\, along with other books including Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle. You will hear about how Serena cried all the way across Bodmin Moor because of Jamaica Inn and how she now makes undergraduates angry when they read Rebecca\, and perhaps have the opportunity to reflect on your own reading. \nDr Serena Trowbridge is Reader in Victorian Literature at Birmingham City University\, where she specialises in Pre-Raphaelite women\, and is Chair of the Pre-Raphaelite Society. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest in attending by Monday 4th July and tell us how many tickets you would like. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:It is Alive if You Are - a talk by Karen Lorenz
DESCRIPTION:Join Karen Lorenz as she talks about her artist residency at the Morrab Library during the Penzance Art Festival\, running throughout June. \nKaren regards her residency as playing with purpose. In her talk\, she reflects on the creative process and how ideas first appear and take shape. ‘It is alive if you are’ illustrates the joy of illusion\, the moving image and being attentive to our surroundings. “I like to animate objects. They make excellent storytellers if you let them.” Karen works with drawing\, experimental animation\, and interactive media to explore that which cannot be articulated with words. \nKaren’s talk will enhance our understanding of her work\, which will be on display in the library during the PZ22 Penzance Art Festival. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest in attending by Monday 6th June and tell us how many tickets you would like. SUMMARY:Merci Ditch Present....Tales From The Reading Room
DESCRIPTION:Merci Ditch Present….Tales From The Reading Room. \nJoin us on Saturday 23rd April from 2.00pm\, when new company Merci Ditch launch themselves on the collective unconscious with some short stories in the afternoon. \nFaithful To The Original: He wrote a novelette upon her naked body\, in one draft without revision\, but how will they publish. \nLetters To Lucy: A mother regularly spills her good and aching heart on to paper\, to coax a lost daughter home; home to a banality she escaped in desperation. \nBibliophelia: A woman finds her heart in books – and buries it there. But human desire is not easily stifled\, and now the books whisper of a life beyond the printed page. \nElton And I: Two inept explorers rove the wide world and plunder a lifetime’s experience of baffling otherness to prove\, with slide photographs\, that one ought never to butter toast with a fork. \nA fundraiser for Morrab Library on The Bard’s birthday. \nAbout Merci Ditch:  \nKate and Stephen first performed together in Seven Stones initial production: Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind at the Minack Theatre. SUMMARY:The British Way of War - A talk by Professor Andrew Lambert
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Andrew Lambert on Wednesday 13th April for a fascinating insight into the uniqueness of  British war strategy. British security needs have been maritime and oceanic\, rather than military and continental\, unlike those of  other major powers\, and when British Governments forget that reality the results have been devastating\, in lives and resources. At the centre of the lecture is Sir Julian Corbett\, (1854-1922)\, the brilliant strategist who developed the concept of a distinctive ‘British Way’ working with the Royal Navy\, Government and the academic community. \nAndrew’s talk is based around his book of the same title – you can listen to a podcast about it here. \nAndrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College\, London\, and Director of the Laughton Naval History Unit. His work focuses on the naval and strategic history of the British Empire between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War and the evolution of seapower. He has published widely and is winner of Anderson Medal of the Society for Nautical Research and the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History. \nAndrew’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 13th April at 2.00pm.  Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and face coverings encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 4th April by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
