SUMMARY:Merci Ditch Present....Tales From The Reading Room
DESCRIPTION:Merci Ditch Present….Tales From The Reading Room. \nJoin us on Saturday 23rd April from 2.00pm\, when new company Merci Ditch launch themselves on the collective unconscious with some short stories in the afternoon. \nFaithful To The Original: He wrote a novelette upon her naked body\, in one draft without revision\, but how will they publish. \nLetters To Lucy: A mother regularly spills her good and aching heart on to paper\, to coax a lost daughter home; home to a banality she escaped in desperation. \nBibliophelia: A woman finds her heart in books – and buries it there. But human desire is not easily stifled\, and now the books whisper of a life beyond the printed page. \nElton And I: Two inept explorers rove the wide world and plunder a lifetime’s experience of baffling otherness to prove\, with slide photographs\, that one ought never to butter toast with a fork. \nA fundraiser for Morrab Library on The Bard’s birthday. \nAbout Merci Ditch:  \nKate and Stephen first performed together in Seven Stones initial production: Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind at the Minack Theatre. They were then in The Wireless Ensemble’s final production of a play written for radio\, and then the newly formed Blabbermouth Theatre Company. Merci Ditch is another new venture to promote their own writing to a local audience. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. SUMMARY:The British Way of War - A talk by Professor Andrew Lambert
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Andrew Lambert on Wednesday 13th April for a fascinating insight into the uniqueness of  British war strategy. British security needs have been maritime and oceanic\, rather than military and continental\, unlike those of  other major powers\, and when British Governments forget that reality the results have been devastating\, in lives and resources. At the centre of the lecture is Sir Julian Corbett\, (1854-1922)\, the brilliant strategist who developed the concept of a distinctive ‘British Way’ working with the Royal Navy\, Government and the academic community. \nAndrew’s talk is based around his book of the same title – you can listen to a podcast about it here. \nAndrew Lambert is Laughton Professor of Naval History in the Department of War Studies at King’s College\, London\, and Director of the Laughton Naval History Unit. His work focuses on the naval and strategic history of the British Empire between the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War and the evolution of seapower. He has published widely and is winner of Anderson Medal of the Society for Nautical Research and the Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History. \nAndrew’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 13th April at 2.00pm.  Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and face coverings encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 4th April by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.

SUMMARY:Buckfast Abbey: The Rebuilding of a Medieval Monastery - a talk by Mark Cottle
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 16th March\, we welcome back the brilliant Mark Cottle\, who will give a talk on the building of Buckfast Abbey in Devon. \nBuckfast Abbey is a unique example in England of a medieval monastery beautifully rebuilt to its original design and use. Founded in 1018 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539\, the Abbey was rebuilt by a small group of dedicated monks in a project lasting just over 30 years. Using archive photographs\, many unpublished\, from the 1880’s to the late 1930’s\, this lecture will tell the story of Abbot Vonier’s great vision and how against the odds this was realised in stone. \nMark’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 16th March at 2pm. Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and mask wearing is encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 7th March by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.

SUMMARY:Robert Burns - The Curly Heided Swan
DESCRIPTION:Enter the ballot for a celebration of Rabbie Burns. \nOn Wednesday 26th January 2022 we will be celebrating the Scottish poet\, Robert Burns\, with Scotsman Des Hannigan\, through stories and verses and a recital of the bard’s famous narrative poem ‘Tam o’ Shanter’. \nPoet of the people and the pastoral\, Burns merged a liberal\, humane approach to life\, salted with realism and romanticism\, and more than a hint of bad behaviour. In Tam o’ Shanter\, he spins the glorious\, cautionary tale of the drunken farmer Tam and his grey mare Meg as they become entangled with witches and warlocks during a night of wild weather – a tale without a tail… \nThe event will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 26th January 2022 at 2pm. Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and mask wearing encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest in attending by 18th January 2022. So we are going to trial a new system\, which we hope will be significantly fairer to all of our members. \nThe first of these trials will go ahead for this event  – Camidge & Stringer (two of our brilliant members) will be performing “The Twelve Days of Thomas Herbert\, 1866-1951” –  a special Christmas-related tribute to the journalist and editor of the Cornishman of many years. \n If you’d like to attend\, get in touch by email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or phone 01736 364474 before Friday 3rd December\, and we’ll add your name to the ballot. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n We’ll then draw out names and let you know if you’ve been successful. (If you don’t hear from us\, please assume you have not been fortunate this time.) \nThis will be a really fun event\, so enter your name in the ballot! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Come and share the many Cornish christmases throughout the life of Herbert Thomas ( 1866-1951)\, journalist for over sixty years and editor of the Cornishman newspaper for forty years. He was quite the local celebrity\, but also a poet\, mining expert\, songwriter\, adventurer and a larger-than-life character! Herbert’s life will be served up with all the seasonal trimmings including newspaper stories\, advertisements and much\, much more because Herbert’s story is the story of the news in Cornwall. \nA light-hearted\, multi-media performance with music\, humour and plenty of nostalgic photos and films from CAMIDGE & STRINGER. \n“A wonderful double-act\, who combine humour and fact-finding to bring true stories to life… laughs a-plenty” – Cornishman \nSuggested donation £5.

SUMMARY:Abigail Reynolds' Lost Libraries - fully booked
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED…\n‘Normal’ service is on its way…\nWe are delighted to let you know that we are making a tentative step towards resuming our talks programme\, and the first of these promises to be quite special. Numbers by necessity need to be reduced in the Reading Room\, so this will ‘sell out’ quite fast – apologies to those who miss out this time. We will retain a waiting list in case of cancellations. As ever\, we ask for a donation at the door\, and you can book by contacting the library. Refreshments will be served afterwards. \n  \n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2016 Abigail Reynolds became the third recipient of the BMW Art Journey\, for her project The Ruins of Time: Lost Libraries of the Silk Road. Abigail made a five-month long journey to fifteen library sites along the Silk Road. The libraries were lost to political conflicts\, natural catastrophes\, revolutions\, and wars. \nReynolds’ journey was based on extensive research and took her to sites dating from 291 BC to 2011 AD\, including libraries along the whole length of the Silk Road – in China\, Uzbekistan\, Turkey\, Egypt\, Italy\, and Iran. Along the way\, Reynolds gathered material on sixteen mm film\, and by written text. \nAt Morrab library she will be talking about her book ‘Lost Libraries’ – a document of her travels which completes a journey that both starts and ends with the institution of the library. \n“The lost libraries are sad and lonely sites\, once full of voices in discussion. What was previously known\, though\, is perhaps never really lost. The enlightenment offered by the libraries is now extinguished\, but the embrace of the dark is not the same as despair.”\n– Abigail Reynolds \nWednesday 3rd November\, 2pm\nBooking Essential\n£5 Suggested Donation
