SUMMARY:Deadlier Than The Male: Wives of the Generals\, 1677-1937
DESCRIPTION:How much influence did notable wives have on the leading commanders in British military history? These women tend to be disregarded but\, as Trina Beckett demonstrates in this revealing and thought- provoking study\, their influence has often been profound. Taking examples from the eighteenth century to the Second World War\, she uncovers a hidden dimension in the rise to prominence of some of Britain’s most famous soldiers and documents a series of fascinating relationships between powerful men and equally powerful women. Sarah Churchill\, Duchess of Marlborough\, and Dorothy\, Countess Haig are perhaps the most famous examples of wives who played important roles in their husbands’ brilliant careers. Yet sometimes the wives of leading commanders would be hindered as well as helped by their wives. Paulina Wood proved such a disastrous hostess that she almost destroyed the career of Sir Evelyn Wood\, and Lord Robert’s reputation for jobbery owed much to his wife Nora’s constant interference in appointments. Trina Beckett’s perceptive and absorbing case studies reveal much about the women whose lives she portrays and the contribution they made to their distinguished husbands’ military careers. \nTrina Beckett has contributed to a number of short story anthologies\, including The Waterloo Collection: An Anthology of Short Stories (2011)\, which raised funds to restore Hougoumont Chateau in time for the battle’s bicentenary commemorations. Trina is married\, has 2 children\, 4 grandchildren\, and lives in Cornwall: this is her first book. \n  \nFree\, all welcome & booking recommended.

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Treffry Collection: Formal handover by Hypatia Trust
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Treffry Collection: Official handover by Hypatia Trust\, followed by cream tea\, and Hypatia book launch of Ann Batten Crystal – Poetical Sketches \nThe Elizabeth Treffry Collection (ETC) contains over 3000 books and artifacts that document the lives and works of women in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. \nIts strengths are in 19th and 20th century art and literature. The core collection comprises works by women about Cornwall and Scilly; about women from Cornwall and Scilly; and works on other subjects by women from\, or influenced by\, Cornwall and Scilly. \nThe collection spans fiction and non-fiction works and it will play an essential part in rebalancing narratives about Cornish and Scillonian history and literature. ETC is an exemplar project for recording\, researching\, preserving and promoting women’s heritage in other under-represented regions of the world and will encourage replication. We also hope that improved access to such collections will provide young women and girls with the historical role models they need to feel confident and to achieve their potential. \nThe objectives of the Elizabeth Treffry Collection:\n\nTo honour women’s achievements in Cornwall and Scilly by knowing their histories\nTo remember women’s lives spent in Cornwall and Scilly and tell their stories\nTo support women’s creativity nurtured in Cornwall and Scilly by supporting their interests\nTo create role models for women in Cornwall and Scilly in work\, play and at home\nTo record\, promote and freely share women’s histories in a new public home and online
