The film sets the composer in the beautiful landscape of Cornwall which inspired many of his compositions and takes the form of three acts which follows the dramatic episodes in his life. \nSalt of the Earth directed by Ellyn Glanmor-Harris (dur. 7 mins)\nThis documentary follows the creative process of the photography book by David and Jan Penprase which documents the vibrant fishing community of Newlyn. It shows how the book came to be made. \nIntermission – refreshments will be available \nLiving on the edge by 3S Films Penzance (Winner Special Jury Award Celtic Film and TV Festival Fort William1995. dur. 30 mins)\nAn insider’s view of a year in the life of a traveller’s camp. It follows the effort of a small group to build a home in in ancient disused quarry in Cornwall on the very edge of England. The film provides fascinating insights into the lifestyle and aspirations of these self appointed outcasts. It’s a gripping real life drama played out between the travellers and the rural communities around them . \nHidden in History Women in St Ives Industry (dur. 14 mins)\nThis documentary explores role of women who worked in the textile industries in St Ives. The first industry was the famous Crysede silk factory but the women also worked making camouflage nets during WW2 and later  clothes for John Lewis .The film also shows how the women were reunited in a workshop/party in St Ives after many years. SUMMARY:Evolving Metaphors: Colin Wilson and Ufology
DESCRIPTION:David J. Moore\, a researcher on the late Cornwall-based existentialist\, Colin Wilson\, will be talking about the curious link between the paranormal and existential philosophy\, and how this relates to Wilson’s ‘new existentialism’. Mr Moore has written on ufology and Wilson’s philosophy at length in his debut book\, Evolutionary Metaphors: Ufos\, New Existentialism and the Future Paradigm. In it he argues that there is an essential unity in Wilson’s vast output; linking his earliest philosophical concerns with his later works.  \nThe talk will range over the curious logic which underlies the UFO phenomenon\, and how\, in analysing the anomalous – or even experiencing the anomalous first-hand –  it re-orientates a particular\, and often insightful\, approach to meaning\, providing what he calls an ‘evolutionary metaphor’. \n  \n

Their inventive approach has brought forward new designs and ideas which encourage us to rethink the purpose and function of books. DESCRIPTION:ALL WELCOME – BOOKING RECOMMENDED – SUGGESTED ENTRY DONATION £4 \nRoland Morris\, a marine salver among many other things\, once said “In order to find sunken treasure one has to start with a chart\, preferably one made of old leather soaked in oil.” And by thunder\, when as a young teenager\, he found one and therein lies our story of one man’s quest to rescue from the sea what the sea had taken from the many. \nOur voyage of discovery takes us into the darkness\, one stormy night in October 1707 with the loss of the Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell’s treasure laden Flagship – Association. And to 1798 with the sinking of HMS Colossus and the recovery of fragments from the second Hamilton collection of antique greek vases\, now housed in the British Museum. \nSuzy Williams is a Cornish maid living in Penzance on a quest to rediscover stories about Cornwall & it’s people. DESCRIPTION:How much influence did notable wives have on the leading commanders in British military history? These women tend to be disregarded but\, as Trina Beckett demonstrates in this revealing and thought- provoking study\, their influence has often been profound. Taking examples from the eighteenth century to the Second World War\, she uncovers a hidden dimension in the rise to prominence of some of Britain’s most famous soldiers and documents a series of fascinating relationships between powerful men and equally powerful women. Sarah Churchill\, Duchess of Marlborough\, and Dorothy\, Countess Haig are perhaps the most famous examples of wives who played important roles in their husbands’ brilliant careers. Yet sometimes the wives of leading commanders would be hindered as well as helped by their wives. Paulina Wood proved such a disastrous hostess that she almost destroyed the career of Sir Evelyn Wood\, and Lord Robert’s reputation for jobbery owed much to his wife Nora’s constant interference in appointments. Trina Beckett’s perceptive and absorbing case studies reveal much about the women whose lives she portrays and the contribution they made to their distinguished husbands’ military careers. \nTrina Beckett has contributed to a number of short story anthologies\, including The Waterloo Collection: An Anthology of Short Stories (2011)\, which raised funds to restore Hougoumont Chateau in time for the battle’s bicentenary commemorations.
