DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that local artist Claire Lucas is back in the library to offer a Spring Art Day on Saturday 12th March.  \nUsing the wonderful plants of Morrab Gardens\, photographs of the local landscape or simply your imagination as inspiration\, this Art Day offers you the opportunity to celebrate the unique beauty and promise of early Spring. \nThe day will begin with a slideshow of local artists’ representations of Spring\, followed by a discussion about what Spring means to us individually and how we would like to portray it in art. The remainder of the day will bee spent producing sketches and / or more finished pieces using a variety of media of your choice. \nAll levels of experience welcome. \nCost: £65 (or £80 to include lunch at the Honeypot). \nYou can book directly with Claire if you’d like to attend. SUMMARY:Buckfast Abbey: The Rebuilding of a Medieval Monastery - a talk by Mark Cottle
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 16th March\, we welcome back the brilliant Mark Cottle\, who will give a talk on the building of Buckfast Abbey in Devon. \nBuckfast Abbey is a unique example in England of a medieval monastery beautifully rebuilt to its original design and use. Founded in 1018 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539\, the Abbey was rebuilt by a small group of dedicated monks in a project lasting just over 30 years. Using archive photographs\, many unpublished\, from the 1880’s to the late 1930’s\, this lecture will tell the story of Abbot Vonier’s great vision and how against the odds this was realised in stone. \nMark’s talk will take place in the Reading Room on Wednesday 16th March at 2pm. Numbers will be limited\, windows open\, and mask wearing is encouraged. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 7th March by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served after the talk.
