SUMMARY:Forced To Flee - A Talk From Dr Lynne Jones
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 4th May at 2pm\, Dr Lynne Jones will give a talk in the Reading Room discussing the migrant experience\, documented in her book The Migrant Diaries\, which is available to borrow from the library. \nHer book is dedicated to “all those forced to leave the place they call home” and bears essential witness to the refugee crises of France\, Greece\, Italy and Mexico over a period of five years. In this talk\, Dr Lynne Jones will discuss what forces families to make these journeys – including the climate and ecological crises – and will strike a sharp chord with the stories of displacement currently at the forefront of our minds. Her diaries records the voices of those we very rarely hear from and shares their extraordinary tales. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest and the number of tickets required by Monday 25th April by email or telephone. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 Suggested donation. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Meet the Occupants of the Elizabeth Treffry Room - a talk by Maggi Livingstone and Melissa Morse
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next talk on Wednesday 18th May with Maggi Livingstone and Melisa Morse\, who will introduce us to four remarkable women: \nVioletta Thurstan – 1879 -1978 WWI heroine\, linguist\, writer of both fact and fiction\, traveller and weaver. \nGrace Pettman Pout – 1870-1952 Preacher\, writer of 50 novels & 270 short stories\, who began her career when she was just 7 years old. \nLitz Pisk – 1909-1997 Artist\, writer and internationally renowned teacher of Movement at The Central School of Speech and Drama. \nLilian Bland – 1878-1971 Journalist\, pioneer aviator and aeronautical engineer. \nThe library holds archive collections on three of these great women\, and Maggi and Melissa will bring all of their stories to life in this upcoming talk. \nMaggi  Livingstone worked as an archivist in two East Suffolk Museums prior to moving to Cornwall several years ago. She now volunteers with the Hypatia Trust and Morrab Library.  Her particular interests are to highlight those women whose work has never been celebrated. \nMelissa Morse  is a retired policy civil servant who moved from London to Cornwall five years ago. She spends her time gazing at the sea\, volunteering\, binging box sets\, throwing pots and playing in a string quartet. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. SUMMARY:Creative wellbeing workshops using pen and paper\, with Emma Farley
DESCRIPTION:  \nEmma Farley is a local feminist bookworm and stationery addict\, encouraging women to explore the joys of reading and journaling to feel inspired\, empowered and improve their mental wellbeing. She will be running some taster creative wellbeing workshops at the library on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd May\, providing an  introduction to journaling and modern calligraphy in the context of  mindfulness\, building self-esteem\, goal setting and more\, all while having fun with pen and paper. \n \nAdult sessions will run on Friday 20 May from 1:15-2:15pm and 2:30-3:30pm. Tickets are £5 each and include a goody bag (including a notebook and pens)\, plus a hot drink. \nChildren’s sessions will run on Saturday 21 May from 1:15-2:15pm and 2:30-3:30pm. This season is aimed at children in key stages 1 and 2. If the weather is dry\, we’ll end the session exploring mindfulness and nature in Morrab Gardens. Tickets are £5 per child and include a goody bag (including a notebook\, pencil\, and stickers)\, plus a hot drink for grown-ups. SUMMARY:D-Day: The Greatest Military Operation in History
DESCRIPTION:Join Major Hugo White for a talk in the Morrab Library Reading Room about the Normandy landings. \nHugo White was born into a military family and grew up in India. He joined the army when he was 18 and started his career with The Coldstream Guards and trained at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. In 1950 he was commissioned into the Somerset Light Infantry. After leaving the Army in 1979 he was invited to reorganise the Regimental Museum in Bodmin. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system.
