SUMMARY:Hannah More - film screening in the library
DESCRIPTION:Morrab Library is delighted to be hosting a screening of the film\, Hannah More\, directed and produced by our own library members Diana Taylor and Anthea Page at 1.30pm on Tuesday 5th July. \nThe film\, set in the 18th century\, charts the true story of the life of Hannah More\, born into poverty and then betrayed in love\, who eventually became one of the most influential women of her time\, a turbulent period when revolution threatened from across the channel. \nHighlighting the plight of women in the 18th century. Hannah was a member of the Blue Stocking Club\, the forerunner of the Feminist Movement in the UK\, and became a playwright in London’s theatres. \n‘The Hannah More movie trailer is very beautiful and this looks like a fabulous must watch film. The costumes are full of lovely colours and textures. The contrast of the settings and the light create a moving atmosphere that is full of drama’ Vimeo. \nThe film is a collaboration between retired BBC staff and students from Bristol University\, UWE\, The Old Vic Theatre School and Bath Spa\, and was filmed on location in and around Bristol. \nThe film runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes\, and refreshments will be served afterwards. We’ll also be selling bags of popcorn for the screening! \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest in attending by Monday 27th June and tell us how many tickets you would like. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Reading and Re-Reading Daphne du Maurier: how books change us A talk by Dr Serena Trowbridge
DESCRIPTION:A book may always be the same\, but readers change; books we read as young adults speak to us in very different ways throughout our lives. This informal talk will explore a thirty-year engagement with du Maurier’s novels\, from breathless teenage reading in the school library to teaching them in a university setting\, along with other books including Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and Dodie Smith’s I Capture the Castle. You will hear about how Serena cried all the way across Bodmin Moor because of Jamaica Inn and how she now makes undergraduates angry when they read Rebecca\, and perhaps have the opportunity to reflect on your own reading. \nDr Serena Trowbridge is Reader in Victorian Literature at Birmingham City University\, where she specialises in Pre-Raphaelite women\, and is Chair of the Pre-Raphaelite Society. \nWe will allocate tickets by a ballot system. Please register your interest in attending by Monday 4th July and tell us how many tickets you would like. We will then draw out names and let you know if you have been successful. \n£5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop - inspired by The Palace of Holyroodhouse with Bridget Crowley
DESCRIPTION:Join author and art historian Bridget Crowley for an innovative workshop which will use the stories\, history\, paintings and artefacts of this historic Scottish palace to inspire your own free\, creative writing. \nBridget Crowley is an author and art historian\, with a previous life in theatre. For many years\, she has worked with students of all ages in the major national art galleries and museums\, looking at images\, artefacts and architecture as a source for creative writing. She recently finished a two-year stint at the National Gallery in London as one of a team of six authors writing the new accessible descriptions of the collection for their website. She also provided the text for audio-described tours for blind and partially sighted visitors to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Westminster Abbey\, and the introductory notes for such visits for the Tate St Ives website. Her four children’s books were published by Hodder\, one of them nominated for the Edgar Allen Poe award in the USA.  \nThe Palace of Holyroodhouse is Her Majesty the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. It stands under the shadow of Arthur’s Seat\, the ancient extinct volcano which has seen the drama of the royal story in Edinburgh unfold over hundreds of years. Part magnificent palace and part dour fortress\, Holyroodhouse tells the stories of the Stuarts and later British monarchs in its rooms\, its art and artefacts. Bridget will use images of the palace to illustrate those stories and to give you impetus for your own free\, creative writing. She may also give you a peep behind the scenes to give you an idea of what it’s like to work there today! \nTo book a place or for more information contact Morrab Library.
