SUMMARY:FULLY BOOKED - Poetry of Place - A workshop with Jodie Hollander
DESCRIPTION:FULLY BOOKED – this event is fully booked \nJodie Hollander’s workshop will focus on the significance of place in poetry. Place may be defined as a geographical location\, an internal state\, or perhaps a poetic meeting of the two. Using the library’s unique and extraordinary surroundings as an inspiration\, this workshop will lead students through a series of writing prompts to ultimately create an original draft of a poem. In addition\, the class will centre around how to structure and develop poems and the creative process that is involved. \nJodie’s work has appeared in numerous poetry journals. Her debut full-length collection\, My Dark Horses\, was published with Liverpool University Press & Oxford University Press. Her second collection\, Nocturne\, will be published in Spring 2023. She is the recipient of a MacDowell fellowship and a Fulbright fellowship in South Africa. \nBooking is essential – please contact the library at enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or telephone: 01736 364474 to reserve a place. Cost: £20 payable on the day.

Nocturne will be published in Spring 2023. She is the recipient of a MacDowell fellowship and a Fulbright fellowship in South Africa. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. SUMMARY:William Borlase\, Uniformitarianism and the Ice Age in Cornwall | With Professor James Scourse
DESCRIPTION:For natural scientists working in Cornwall\, Borlase is where it all started. His descriptions and observations are hugely valuable and his interpretations are well ahead of their time. James’ talk will focus on his observations on the geology at Porth Nanven (Cot Valley). He will explain why Borlase was years ahead of the movers and shakers in geology at the time in interpreting the sediments\, in terms of processes operating now (the actualistic principle that underlies Uniformitarianism) rather than resorting to Biblical explanations. \nHe will then explain our current understanding of these and associated sediments and how we can interpret them to paint a picture of how Cornwall has evolved over the last 120\,000 years\, latterly coinciding with archaeology and cultural evolution. \nTickets are allocated by a ballot system. Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk or call 01736 364474 to be entered into the ballot for a ticket. The ballot closes on Monday 8th May. \nEntry is £5 by donation to help raise funds for Morrab Library. Refreshments will be provided after the talk.
