NEW ROLL OF HONOUR FOR PENZANCE
For many years the Penzance Roll of Honour was available for viewing in the small chapel in Penlee Memorial Garden. Recently, due to structural problems, it was moved to the first floor within Penlee Gallery and Museum.
As this Roll of Honour contained scant details, work commenced several years ago to research and compile a more comprehensive and fitting record of those who made the supreme sacrifice. Against all those named the new roll now includes rank, decorations, unit and place of death together with a short biography. There are still a few gaps but it is hoped that the missing information will soon come to light. The enlargement of Penzance borough has also been taken into account with the inclusion of Gulval, Heamoor, Newlyn, Paul and Mousehole. The total number of names is now 655 broken down as follows:
Boer War 8
Great War 380
World War II 260
Korean War 3
Other conflicts 4
The new Roll of Honour, printed and bound, will be formally presented to Penzance Town Council later this year to mark the 400th year since the granting of the charter to the town.
A copy of the Roll of Honour is also available to view at the Morrab Library.
