Wilkie Collins Rambles in Cornwall
Long before The Woman in White, a young Wilkie Collins aspired to become a writer and
decided to tour the untrodden ground of Cornwall to produce a travel book of a hitherto
unexplored destination.
Rambles Beyond Railways was published in 1851 and the result is an extraordinary insight
into the lives of Cornish people, who worked on the land, underground and on the sea.
Join Wilkie Collins Society Member, Jak Stringer for a light-hearted, informative multi-
media talk, which combines an exploration into this great man’s early years, with some
incredible stories from his book.
“Jak Stringer is a one woman Wilkie wonder. Living in Penzance, she is single-handedly
bringing to life the 1851 stories and experiences of the young Wilkie Collins in Rambles
Beyond Railways.” – The Wilkie Collins Society Newsletter
