Wed 8th May, 2pm – Stephen Glendenning:
The Art of the Book
How Artists have Challenged the Conventions of Publishing Throughout History

The Book: It is perhaps one of the most significant and iconic design objects of western culture.

Stephen works as a conservation bookbinder and whilst his work is to preserve material culture, he is also aware that western culture evolves and moves forward by a willingness to challenge conventions, question the norms and occasionally break the rules!

During the 20th century, artists and crafts people have sought to challenge or improve upon the conventions of what a book might be. Their inventive approach has brought forward new designs and ideas which encourage us to rethink the purpose and function of books. Sometimes subversive, sometimes delightful; these ideas often go hand in hand with the pioneering philosophical and psychological viewpoints of their time.

This lecture presents the findings of a two year research project that seeks to re-frame our understanding of the humble codex.

Get ready for some surprises.
