Make a book – a workshop for beginners

Local artist Karen Lorenz is the Morrab Library’s artist-in-residence during the Penzance Festival of Art, running throughout June.

As part of her tenure, Karen is offering a workshop to create a small hand sewn notebook with a paper flat back cover.

You’ll begin with the fundamentals of book binding, understanding about paper grain and the hand tools you will need. Karen will teach the traditional long stich with link stitch method. You’ll prepare the cover and reinforce the edges and spine for extra support and protection. This technique won’t require glue. You learn how to fold large sheets of paper and create deckle (hand-torn) edges before sewing the signatures together to make a beautiful handmade book.

This course is suitable for beginners. The price of £15 includes the materials and all tools are supplied.
