A plaque, still found at the Union Hotel on Chapel A plaque, still found at the Union Hotel on Chapel Street in Penzance, commemorates the first announcement to the British public about the ‘Victory of the Battle of Trafalgar’ on 21st October 1805.

It is supposed that word travelled back to Penzance before anywhere else with fishermen that passed the fleet returning from Trafalgar, though this account has been disputed by historians.

With our focus on folklore this month, we thought With our focus on folklore this month, we thought we’d highlight ‘The Magic Ointment and other Cornish Legends’. It’s a wonderful miniature compendium of Cornish folk stories - filled to the brim with fairies, giants, witches and more!

There are plenty of other Cornish gems in our collection, especially in the Children’s literature room.

There is a small writing exercise on the children’s section of our website that will have you thinking up some of your own Cornish tales.
