Our next Library talk will be with Vivienne Tregen Our next Library talk will be with Vivienne Tregenza and Abigail Ottley, with ‘Women’s Work’, a poetry reading. This will take place in the Reading Room from 2pm-3pm on Wednesday 18th February.

Award-winning Penzance poets Abigail Ottley and Vivienne Tregenza will each introduce their first collections, published in 2025.

In May 2025, Simon Clarke, photographer, writer an In May 2025, Simon Clarke, photographer, writer and anthropologist, joined us to deliver a talk about his latest publication, “Life Itself: Photography and South Africa”.

The book charts the photographic history of the country from colonialism to democracy, from the early European photographers to work by young South Africans today. ‘Life Itself’ explores how people, events and places have been depicted in photographic images over the decades.

Tomorrow is Burns night, so to celebrate we search Tomorrow is Burns night, so to celebrate we searched back through our archive of talks (which can be viewed on our website) and present you with the greatly missed Des Hannigan’s talk from 2022 on the poet.

Through stories and verses and a recital of the bard's famous narrative poem 'Tam o' Shanter', Des spoke about Burns being a poet of the people and the pastoral.
