There’s still time to pop your name into the hat for George Brendon’s his book, 'Haile Selassie: The West Country Years'. It examines the places in the West Country visited by Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia during his exile in Bath in the 1930s after the Italians invaded his country.

These locations include Penzance, Zennor, Hartland, Torquay, Exeter, Plymouth, and many others.

Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk before Wednesday 16th September to be entered into the ballot for a ticket.

When you're next visiting the Library make sure to pop upstairs to see the latest display in our exhibition case.

This month we are showcasing one of the rare books in our collection: Conrad Gesner (1516–1565), ‘Historia Animalium’, 2nd edition, 1617-1620. Volumes 1 and 2.

This large volume comprises two of a set of five written by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner. Through these books, Gesner became the first naturalist to attempt to describe all the known animals (and some unknown) of the world, even though he would not have seen the majority of them in the flesh. Artist and writer, James Calderbank’s talk takes you on a journey through Cornwall and the landscape that inspired Arthurian legends.

This magnificent headland is ‘Gurnards Head’ on the rugged north coast of Penwith, although this photo was taken around 130 years ago! This view will be spotted on ‘Section 7: Pendeen Watch to Zennor’

Each one is individually crafted by local maker Tracey Harris.

Each Matchbox costs £10, and proceeds from sales will go towards the care of our beautiful library.

You can purchase these beautiful library mementoes from the Reception desk in the library, or for an additional fee, you can call us to place an order and we’ll post them out to you. Look out for them too at our Library Fairs, on sale at the Library table.

Our Miles for The Morrab campaign is now well underway and thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, we’ve already raised 42% of our £5,000 target.

Every donation is now being DOUBLED!

We’re delighted that The Myner Trust has agreed to match donations to our campaign, up to £2,500.

That means every £10 donated becomes £20 for The Morrab Library. Every £25 becomes £50. Every £50 becomes £100.

The author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, was born

The author of Frankenstein, Mary Shelley, was born #onthisday in 1797.

Last summer, Dr Serena Trowbridge gave a talk at the library about the legacies of ‘Frankenstein’, which explored why a novel written by a teenager over 200 years ago still matters today. You can watch the talk via the link in our bio.

As well as Shelley’s novel, we also have other books about Frankenstein including these two, both available to borrow from our new books shelf in reception.
