It's International Volunteers Day. Morrab Library certainly has the classiest volunteers by far. Here's Martin reporting for archive cataloguing duty in his 1950's smoking jacket and his grandad's fez! We love our volunteers and while we have a handful back with us, most are still not able to return. We miss them terribly.

Today we commemorate the publication in 1859 of one of history's most important works of scientific literature. Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection presented evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution.
Darwin researched his theory for more than 20 years before publication, and it caused an enormous amount of scientific, religious, and philosophical debate and discussion, both positive and negative.
Morrab Library holds Darwin's most important book, alongside other titles by the great naturalist, as well as many subsequent works about him and his research.

A very happy birthday to one of our favourite chil

A very happy birthday to one of our favourite children's writers Andy Stanton, author of the truly mad and wonderful Mr Gum series.

Here's a quote from a book review (see the full blog on our website - search 'Mr Gum') by Ned, one of our junior members, about Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear:

"I liked this book because –
The drawings made me laugh.
The bear’s sadness made me sad.
It was bizarre.
It was funny.
The last bit made me happy.
The most funny bit was the measurements: as tall as 40 hamsters and as heavy as 19,000 grapes (the bear, not Mr Gum)."
