Our Librarian, Lisa, recently returned from a trip

Our Librarian, Lisa, recently returned from a trip to the Outback town of Roma in Queensland, Australia, where she met staff Erin and Tammy working at the local library there.

Their chat proved that even though our libraries are located at the opposite ends of the world, we share the same commitment to supporting reading and learning, and working to make sure our respective libraries play a vital role in our local communities.

This is a quarter plate glass negative of Trencrom Hill Fort from the Stanley Opie Archaeology collection. It is 1 of 1001 quarter-plate glass negatives which depict archaeological sites and excavations from the 1920s to 1950s.
Trencrom is a good place to pause and take in the incredible views of both coasts on the ‘Section 9: St Ives to Ludgvan (via St Michael's Way)’.

Have you bought your ticket for the John le Carré Memorial Lecture 2026?

This year the lecture will be given by Jonny Geller, CEO of the leading literary agency Curtis Brown Group and Le Carré’s literary agent.

Because of his close relationship with John le Carré, Jonny will give a personal insight into the writer’s craft, whilst touching on the process of getting novels to print. He will also explain how the John le Carré Estate is working to ensure that the writer’s books continue to be read after his death, and find new and broader audiences through film, television and theatre adaptations.

There’s still time to pop your name into the hat for George Brendon’s his book, 'Haile Selassie: The West Country Years'. It examines the places in the West Country visited by Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia during his exile in Bath in the 1930s after the Italians invaded his country.

These locations include Penzance, Zennor, Hartland, Torquay, Exeter, Plymouth, and many others.

Please email enquiries@morrablibrary.org.uk before Wednesday 16th September to be entered into the ballot for a ticket.

When you're next visiting the Library make sure to pop upstairs to see the latest display in our exhibition case.

This month we are showcasing one of the rare books in our collection: Conrad Gesner (1516–1565), ‘Historia Animalium’, 2nd edition, 1617-1620. Volumes 1 and 2.

This large volume comprises two of a set of five written by Swiss naturalist Conrad Gesner. Through these books, Gesner became the first naturalist to attempt to describe all the known animals (and some unknown) of the world, even though he would not have seen the majority of them in the flesh.
