As we gear up to this year's John le Carré Memoria

As we gear up to this year's John le Carré Memorial lecture on the 25th November, a throwback to 2024. The programme of events for that year's John le Carré Memorial lecture included the @taswestcornwall’s commission of a portrait of le Carré by Gary Long, a well-known local artist and tutor at the St Ives School of Painting.

Gary visited the library to take his reference photos and fittingly depicted le Carré in the Library, with a member of Library staff shelving books in the background.

A pigeon painted in flight gives a nod to le Carré’s first memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life. The painting now resides on the staircase at the library.

Our volunteers have been delving into the collections again, looking for the stories behind some of our archival treasures.

Kay volunteers in our Photographic Archive. She was fascinated by our album of pressed seaweeds, collected from Mounts Bay in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Penzance Old Cornwall Society is celebrating 1

The Penzance Old Cornwall Society is celebrating 100 years with a display of archives at The Morrab Library. This will take place in the Reading Room on Saturday 10th October from 10.00am-3.00pm.

Since its formation in 1926 the Penzance Old Cornwall Society has kept an eclectic record of its activities, key events in Penzance and the varied interests of its members.

From minutes of its first meeting and involvement in the first Gorsedd Kernow, to pilgrimages, photographs and the script of the opera Iernin premiered in Penzance 1934.

Drop in to the Library on the day to see the some of the archive highlights.
