Sam's internship in the Photo Archive has now come Sam's internship in the Photo Archive has now come to an end, and we are grateful for all of his hard work and lovely company.

As well as writing no less than seven blogs, and delivering a talk (soon to be available to view on our website), Sam also wrote a longer, academic article exploring the maritime communities of West Cornwall between 1865 and 1935, using our photographic collections.

You can find a link to this in the bio, as well as links to all of his seven blogs.

A big thank you Sam!

Here's the next in our series of shipwreck photos, Here's the next in our series of shipwreck photos, selected by our Photo Archive Intern, Sam Hill.

"The Cardiff tramp ship, Bluejacket, struck the longship rocks whilst transporting railway sleepers from Danzig to Plymouth.

She hit the rocks at full speed, which caused the vessel to be poised like a gigantic seesaw across the rocks- she was only sixty feet from the Longships lighthouse door!"

Today is #worldphotophotographyday. In our #photo Today is #worldphotophotographyday.

In our #photoarchive we have lots of portraits taken by James Chenhall. Born in Redruth in 1845. His first appearance was in 1866 as photographic assistant in Bullers Row, Redruth. A few years later moved to 11 West End and continued until 1910. Married in 1860s and in 1880s opened a business in Helston. Virtually all of his work is portraits including this one of Miner, Dicky Vine.

This note was written on the reverse of photograph:

“Dicky Vine fell down the mine stack and broke his little finger. His coat opened as a type of parachute and broke his fall, a narrow escape.”

What a lucky escape!
